An essential ‘eco-san’ toilet block for Volta Senior High School which provides sanitation for over 200 students previously using their neighbours’ limited facilities. Built with practical and effective design and construction.
The new toilet block is built based on the principles of ecological sanitation (eco-san). It contains above ground units that recycle human waste and uses natural processes to transform the waste into a safe, organic compost and fertiliser to be used locally. The design also incorporates a hand hygiene facility based on the use of the ‘Veronica bucket’ which is coined the ‘Tippy Tap’. Dream Big Ghana staff provided users with hand-washing demonstrations at the opening ceremony in order to maximise the health benefits of access to safe sanitation. (The worldwide Covid-19 pandemic has drawn attention to the unacceptable number of students globally without adequate hand-washing facilities).
The project was designed with consideration of a small budget, limited available materials, and the provision of work for a skilled local construction team.
